DAL DHOKLI
Dal dhokli is a traditional Gujarati dish that combines lentils (dal) with pieces of spiced wheat flour dumplings (dhokli). Here's a simple recipe to make Dal Dhokli at home:
### Ingredients:
- 1 cup Toor dal (split pigeon peas)
- 1 cup whole wheat flour
- 2 tomatoes, finely chopped
- 1-inch piece of ginger, grated
- 2-3 cloves of garlic, minced
- 1 green chili, finely chopped
- 1 tsp cumin seeds
- 1/2 tsp turmeric powder
- 1 tsp red chili powder
- 1 tsp coriander powder
- 1/2 tsp garam masala
- Salt to taste
- 2 tbsp oil
- Fresh coriander leaves for garnishing
- Water as needed
### For Tempering (Tadka):
- 1 tbsp ghee
- 1 tsp mustard seeds
- 1/2 tsp asafoetida (hing)
- 1-2 dried red chilies
- Few curry leaves
### Instructions:
1. **Prepare the Dal:**
- Wash the toor dal and pressure cook with turmeric powder, salt, and 3 cups of water until soft and mushy. Keep aside.
2. **Prepare the Dhokli:**
- In a mixing bowl, combine the whole wheat flour, 1/2 tsp turmeric powder, 1/2 tsp red chili powder, 1/2 tsp cumin seeds, salt, and a little oil.
- Gradually add water and knead into a smooth dough. Divide the dough into small portions and roll out into thin circles.
- Cut the rolled-out dough into small diamond or square-shaped pieces.
3. **Cooking Dal Dhokli:**
- Heat oil in a deep pan, add cumin seeds, and let them splutter.
- Add chopped green chili, ginger, and garlic.
- Add chopped tomatoes and cook until they soften.
- Add coriander powder, red chili powder, garam masala, and salt. Mix well.
- Add the cooked dal to the pan and bring it to a boil. Adjust the consistency by adding water if needed.Add some jaggery and tamarind for a sweet and sour taste to the Dal.
You can also add peanuts to the Dal if you prefer.
- Gently drop the prepared dhokli pieces into the boiling dal.
- Cover and cook on low heat for about 15-20 minutes or until the dhokli is cooked through.
4. **Prepare the Tempering (Tadka):**
- Heat ghee in a small pan. Add mustard seeds and let them crackle.
- Add dried red chilies, curry leaves, and a pinch of asafoetida. Saute for a few seconds.
- Pour this tempering over the cooked Dal Dhokli.
5. **Garnish with fresh coriander leaves and serve hot.**
Enjoy your homemade Dal Dhokli with some rice or roti for a wholesome and flavorful meal!
Note: You can also make the Dhokli plain without adding the spices.
